| MORE THOUGHTS FROM: |
| "My father, Richard L. "Dick" Carpenter, was in Korea in 1953. He served with the ROK Capital Division, 26th Inf, 2nd Batt. during the latter part of the hot war in Korea. After the last Chinese push in July of 1953 - in which his small unit of Americans (14 KIA out of 28) survived being surrounded and was lost in the shuffle. This was probably due to the change in the Corps area of control changed when the Capitol Division was withdrawn from the line. His unit was isolated on the 14th of July with the ROKs described above - his position on Hill 433 (abt 7-8 klicks east of Kumhwa) was relieved on the morning of 20 July 1953. Later that evening his unit was evacuated to an ASA compound north of the Kimpo airfield near Seoul. The then Top Secret Battlefield radar was turned in and secured and the survivors were debriefed. For the story, please see: http://members.cox.net/lostbastards/ If anyone knows anything about this incident, I would love to hear about it." Many Thanks! John R. | REMINDER - SUBMITTED BY MEMBER RON BAYLES "As a thank-you Korean War veterans are being invited to revisit Korea with a spouse or qualified companion. Those in the military who served between June 25, 1950, and Oct 15, 1954, can qualify for the program in which travelers pay for a pane ticket, but meals, hotel and tours are free, sponsored by the Korean War Veterans Association. The event includes a weeklong tour of battlefields such as the Inchon landing beach and Panmunjom at the demilitarized zone. Besides the tour, veterans will be guests at a banquet and awards ceremony where Royal Order of Korean dignitaries will present each individual with the Ambassador of Peace medal, commissioned especially to thank the veterans for their service. The tour coordinator is retired Marine Corps Col. Warren Wiedhahn, a decorated veteran of the war. Contact: "Jamie" Wiedhahn (jwiedhahn@miltours.com), Korean War Veterans Association, 4600 Duke St., Suite 420, Alexandria, Va 22304-2517; or phone 703-212-0695 or 1-800-722-9501." |
